Altair 5X Multi gas detector response is verified onboard.
The MSA Altair 5X a portable personal safety multi gas detector with an integrated sampling pump built to deliver fast, dependable atmospheric monitoring wherever you work.
Altair 5X stands out for its rugged design and powerful performance. Its over molded housing survives drops of up to 10 feet (3 m) and carries an IP65 dust and water resistant rating, making it ideal for industrial, marine, and confined space environments. With advanced MSA XCell® sensor technology, it can monitor multiple gases simultaneously from combustible vapors and toxic gases to oxygen levels with response times often under 15 seconds.
One of its key strengths is the integrated sampling pump, which actively draws air from hard to reach areas, such as tanks and enclosed spaces, allowing safer remote checks before personnel entry. Whether checking for LEL, O₂, CO, H₂S, VOCs or other configured gases, you get clear, real‑time readings on a bright, easy‑to‑read display.
From quick bump tests in less than 15 seconds to long up to 20 hour battery life, the Altair 5X is engineered to keep you informed and confident on the job. Its triple alert system (audible, visual, and vibration) ensures no alarm goes unnoticed, even in noisy environments.
Compliance & Marine Safety
Under SOLAS Regulation XI‑1/7 and IMO guidelines, every applicable ship must carry suitable portable gas detection instruments capable of measuring oxygen, flammable gases, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon monoxide before enclosed‑space entry. “Suitable means” for calibration must be provided and conducted in accordance with manufacturer instructions and vessel Safety Management Systems.

Regulatory Note:
International maritime safety standards — including SOLAS and IMO enclosed space entry recommendations — require that portable atmosphere testing instruments are capable of measuring key gases prior to personnel entry into confined spaces. These instruments should be routinely tested and calibrated by accepted schedules spelled out by the manufacturer and incorporated into the vessel’s Safety Management System.
